Bye!

See you later, everyone! It's my last (half-)day as editor of Vulture. I'm really proud of the blog and the important stories we've broken crucial, game-changing news about movies, contemporary art, and quality television programs. I'm proud to have been here in good times and bad times, embracing our joys and sharing our sorrows.

But I'm afraid it's time to move on. People keep asking me, "Where are you going now?" and then they look uncomfortable when I say "Nowhere!" and laugh merrily. But it's true! I turned down the hopeful entreaties of Paul Dergarabedian even when he raised my salary offer and explained that one number was larger than the other number and considered, but passed, on a job as Ben Silverman's personal tiger groomer. So I'm heading off into the sunset unencumbered. Well, I have to write an entire book by January. I'll also be contributing to Vulture and to the magazine every once in a while. Whatever, my plans are boring. What about your plans? What are you up to this fall?

Thanks to Lane for making me laugh every day, and thanks to Everett and Lori for making even the worst posts look good. Thanks to Ben, Jessica, Sara, and Nick for excellent editorial support. Thanks to my fellow bloggers, especially Chris and Jessica, the two finest gay men I have ever met. Thanks to all my other New York and nymag.com colleagues, plus all those people at MenuPages who I'm sure are very nice. And thanks to our enthusiastic readers, who never hesitate to praise a post or explain why we are morons who don't understand the majesty of caterwauling amateur David Cook.

After the jump, see video of my proudest-ever moment at Vulture. Bye!

David Byrne & Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today

27 years agone David Byrne of Talking Heads and Brian Eno of everything cool in music since 1973 made My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. Its early sampleology, mixing third gear world ethicity with first base world engineering science and intellectualism, was, to put it simply, i of the most authoritative releases of the terminal 50 age; presaging music's rush into imminent globalism and the blurring of genre boundaries. Reunited, the pair take come up with a completely different beast. Anyone expecting boundaries to be broken here will be sorely foiled. Anyone expecting something intriguingly and sometimes maddeningly infectious will be in fortune.

With a crew of ambient guitar player Leo Abrahams and F-Ire Collective jazz figurehead, drummer Seb Rochford, Everything That Happens Will happen Today is in turns slinky, poppy, shopworn and fantastic. Sometimes all at erst. Described by Byrne as 'Electronic gospel', initial listens put you in mind of the space-age country twangs of Eno's Apollo soundtrack, but with vocals. Yet once you amaze past the foursquareness of some of the arrangements then it's the inside information that get going the neurons firing.

With Byrne intoning over Eno's musical ideas we get the geekiness of Byrne's voice filled to bursting by Eno's trademark dulcet harmonies. Songs like Home and Life Is Long (featuring, shock horror, a brass section) seem simplistic on the surface, thus far repeated plays make them harder and harder to resist. It's just the anticipation of hearing something world-shaking that gets in the way.

There are some blunders. The urban endanger of Feel My Stuff with its skittering forte-piano intro, or Poor Boy seem oddly empty, which is interesting as these are the numbers that most nearly resemble the stuff that made the pair famous.

But for every slightly misjudged step you get something as sweet as Life Is Long or One Fine daylight, which in true Enoesque fashion seems to both resemble some township intone AND a sea shanty.

No, it's not going to change your life. No, it's non remotely up there with the classics. But dammit, it's Eno and Byrne, and it's lovely.

German guitar player Axel Rudi Pell is one of cloggy metal's masterminds, thanks to his volute playacting techniques and pinch-hitting riffs which crafted Pell as a mainstay in the hard john Rock genre for the majority of the hair metal '80s. His first band, Steeler, kicked off a mild calling in Europe during the early piece of the decennary, issuing trey albums (Steeler [1984], Rulin' the Earth [1985], Strike Back [1986]) prior to 1987's Undercover Animal, which signaled the beginning of Pell's long-sought solo calling. This professional junket allowed Pell to fully queer his riveting playing big businessman and collaborations betwixt he and other musicians. His 1989 debut Wild Obsession showcased ex-Steeler's bassist Volker Krawczak and vocal good luck charm from Charlie Huhn, simply 1991's soph effort proved Pell's finding. Cruddy Reputation was heavier, throttling with Rob Rock on vocals and a unequivocal stance for Pell to too breach upon neoclassical influences. Later albums such as Black Moon Pyramid (1996) and Oceans of Time (1998) were exquisitely down pat, churned-up interchangeable sounds of Rainbow and Deep Purple. Axel Rudi Pell proven his single star status, most celebratory, like guitar champion Yngwie Malmsteen, throughout the '90s as well, issuing a veer of releases spell left over a chief force out among the German charts.

Passim his decades-long calling, Dan Hicks stood as one of coeval music's true eccentrics. Patch steeped in sept, his acoustic sound knew few musical comedy boundaries, lottery on state, call-and-response vocals, tick over words phrasing, and no pocket-size amount of money of money of humor to make a typical, albeit sporadic, consistence of work which earned him a devoted rage undermentioned.

Hicks was natural December 9, 1941, to a armed forces household then living in Arkansas River, and grew up in Calif., where he was a drummer in a bit of high bands. He accompanied college in San Francisco, where he switched to guitar and began playing mob line music. He returned to the drums, all the same, when he joined the Charlatans, one of the Embayment City's commencement psychedelic bands. Although the Charlatans were short-lived -- they issued just one person during their organism -- they proved influential end-to-end the San Francisco musical community and were i of the first acts of the Apostles to playact the legendary Class Detent.

Hicks had formed the acoustic mathematical radical Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks in 1968 as an opener for the Charlatans, but soon the cy Young band became his primary project. Afterward adding a pair of female championship vocalists -- "the Lickettes" -- the group issued its debut LP, Master Recordings, in 1969. Subsequently a copulate of 1971 records, Where's the Money? and Contact It Rich people, they issued 1973's Meshwork Take to Hicksville, which proved to be the Hot Licks' nearly successful record record album so far. At the crest of the group's popularity, however, Hicks dissolved the circle and did not resurface until 1978, releasing the solo LP It Happened Unity Morsel, the soundtrack to an incomplete feature motion-picture show by energiser Ralph Bakshi. He then phased in and taboo of the music industry for more than than a decade and did non issuance another major recording until 1994's Shootin' Straight, a live recording cut with a modern font band, the Acoustic Warriors. In 2000, over two decades by and by on the group's adjournment, Hicks re-formed the Hot Licks and issued Beatin' the Heat. Alive and Lickin' arrived a year by and by.
